This semester I taught Oral English. My job was literally to get the students to talk. Since I love talking, I think my classes were a success :) I had wonderful students who were willing to participate. Basically, I lucked out.
Other teachers that I know around China and in my school have not had such a great experience. Not all students are always wanting to participate. Heck, some teachers have experienced students not even wanting to learn English, but it is required.
On top of teaching English majors, I only taught 3 days a week...a total of about 12 hours. Wednesday was my long day -- a grueling 9-hour work day with an hour and a half lunch break plus half-hour breaks between each class. However, I did pick up a little extra work here and there.
Since I taught Oral English, my final exams were one-on-one conversations with each student. I would call them into the room, and we would talk for awhile about different things and I would ask them questions about the stuff that I taught them this semester. It wasn't too bad, but Wednesday I gave a little over 60 exams. Even for me that is a lot of talking.
All in all, I had a great semester with great students. I learned a lot.
Now, all of my friends in Nanjing are going back to America, and I will be traveling for the summer with people that I was fortunate enough to meet in Shanghai at our CIEE orientation. We will be doing up Southern China.
Happy Summer!
P.S. My internet has not been doing so hot lately, so posting to my blog has been somewhat difficult. I have so much more to share, so hopefully I will be posting a lot in the next week or so!
