So, I have been MIA in terms of the blog postings lately. With travelling, teaching a whole week (3 days...rough life right?), and having visitors, I haven't really had a chance to sit down and compose anything. Even my journals have been getting pretty dusty. Although it is clearly past Easter, I feel that it is still appropriate to post about how we celebrated the holiday.
The Wednesday before Easter, our school kindly put together an Easter party for the foreign teachers of our school. We were instructed to sit front and center, and they provided small snacks, fruit, and bottled water for us. There were two hosts: one was a boy who spoke in Chinese, and one was a girl who translated everything into English. Here are some photos from the event:

Just a few of my students who participated in the activites: Pokey, Catherine, and Tiffily
The program included a brief synopsis on what Easter is, a powerpoint presentation made my Lindsey discussing traditions of celebrating the holiday, several musical perfomances (one being "Lose Yourself" by Eminem but performed by a Chinese student -- they should have asked me to perform "Smack That" and they could have seen Eminikki), and activities for the students to win prizes including a small Easter-egg hunt. The performances ranged from Taylor Swift to Bejing Opera style singing to "Apologize" by One Republic performed by a group whose style was modeled after the dance/hip hop crew Jabbawockeez, and of course Eminem. I actually recorded the Eminem performance, but because of the lighting and the fact I had to record it on my cell phone, it didn't turn out good enough to post on here.
For the activities, Ryan was asked to be a judge. When he got up there, he volunteered me to sing a song to the 100+ person audience. I refused. I know, no fun. But there was no way I was going to emabarass myself that terribly bad. If it had been Christmas, I may have busted out some "Jingle Bell Rock," but I don't know any Easter songs!
It was very thoughtful of the school to go out of their way to recognize a holiday that they themselves don't celebrate to make us foreigners feel more at home. While it was much different than any kind of Easter celebration that I have ever been a part of, it was a fun event.
After the celebration, Lindsey, Ryan, Vernon, and I went to a local bar, shot some pool, and drank a few beers. It was a good end to a very long day...plus I beat everyone in pool, so I was pumped! :)
Happy belated Easter!
